Across from the Hotel Belle Arti you will find Galleria dell’Accademia
Belle Arti housing one of the most important collections of
art in the world. On offer are works from Bellini, Tintoretto
and Titian.
Also in the immediate vicinity you will find the Peggy Guggenheim
Museum located in her former home, it hosts the most important
European and American art collection in Italy of the first
half of the 20th century and temporary exhibitions.
Weaving your way through the alleyways you will come to Santa
Maria della Salute, a church built in 1630 to give thanks
to the Virgin Mary for stopping a plague that killed over
150,000 Venetians. This amazing church combines domes inspired
by Rome’s St.Peter’s Basilica and Byzantine architecture.
Every 21st November a pontoon bridge is laid over the Grand
Canal from San Marco to the church. Venetians walk across
to give thanks to Mary and Gondoliers bring their oars to
be blessed.
Across the wooden Accademia bridge you will find St Mark’s
square with the enchanting Basilica containing 13th century
Byzantine and sparkling 16th century renaissance mosaics.
Inside this famous piazza you can also indulge in the famous
pastime of feeding the pigeons.
